Automotive parts importing: frequently asked questions
NHTSA regulates motor vehicle equipment under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Parts that are subject to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and require certification include tires (FMVSS 109, 119, 139), brake hoses and brake fluid (FMVSS 106, 116), glazing materials (FMVSS 205), lighting equipment (FMVSS 108), seat belts (FMVSS 209), and child restraint systems (FMVSS 213). Manufacturers and importers of these parts must certify compliance with the applicable FMVSS standard and maintain records supporting that certification. CBP can detain or refuse entry on safety-regulated parts that arrive without proper certification documentation.
