Health and Wellness Logistics for US Importers
Health and wellness logistics adds an FDA-shaped layer on top of everything else that moves consumer goods. Dietary supplements carry import alert risk on a deep DSHEA-era list of suspect ingredients. Functional beverages and skincare-adjacent topical SKUs can pull into food, drug, or cosmetic classification on the same shelf. Product lines move between regulatory categories every time a rule drafts. The freight question is the easy half.
Platton handles health and wellness imports end to end. From factory pickup in India, China, or Vietnam, through ocean FCL, LCL, or air freight, through customs clearance with FDA Prior Notice, FSVP review where applicable, and HTS classification on every entry, to delivery at LA, Long Beach, New York, New Jersey, Savannah, or directly to a retailer DC.
Whether you are importing your first shipment of dietary supplements or running a multi-SKU wellness program across dozens of retail accounts, the operations team on your account has run supplement and wellness imports before. They know which product types trigger FDA import alerts, coordinate prior notice filing ahead of arrival, and flag retailer chargeback risk on labeling and on-time delivery before the booking locks.
How importing health and wellness products with Platton works
Health and wellness imports run the same ocean and air sequence as other consumer goods, with FDA compliance layered into every pre-shipment step. Here is how Platton runs it.
Origin pickup and documentation review
factory pickup coordinated with pre-shipment review of FDA labeling compliance, ingredient documentation, and certificate of analysis where the product category requires it.
Ocean or air booking
FCL for steady-volume supplement programs, LCL for product launches and smaller vendors, air for samples, new product introductions, and out-of-stock replenishment on high-turn SKUs.
FDA prior notice filing
prior notice submitted electronically to FDA before the vessel arrives at a US port. Late or missing prior notice is grounds for FDA refusal of entry independent of customs clearance status.
ISF filing
the Importer Security Filing (ISF) CBP requires 72 hours before vessel departure from origin. Filed ahead of cutoff on every shipment so the entry does not accumulate a penalty before it reaches the water.
US customs clearance and FDA coordination
customs entry filed with correct HTS classification, and any FDA examination requests coordinated immediately so examinations are scheduled and cleared without unnecessary delay at port.

Modes we run for health and wellness imports
Most supplement and wellness programs run on ocean freight for volume and air freight for speed. We run both, and match the mode to the product type and lead time requirement.
Ocean FCL
for established supplement programs with enough volume to fill a container. Lower per-unit cost than any other mode. Most supplement FCL programs run on 40-foot containers with temperature monitoring available for heat-sensitive formulations.
Ocean LCL
for new product launches, smaller vendors, and SKUs that do not move in full-container quantities. Consolidated at origin and deconsolidated at a US CFS, adding 5 to 7 days versus FCL.
Air freight
for samples, regulatory submission quantities, initial launch inventory, and replenishment when a top-selling SKU sells out ahead of the ocean replenishment cycle. FDA prior notice applies to air freight as well, filed ahead of arrival at the first US port of entry.
Temperature-controlled ocean
for heat-sensitive supplement formats including probiotics, certain liquid formulations, and products with active ingredients that degrade outside a defined temperature range. Reefer containers with continuous monitoring available on key lanes.
Where we ship health and wellness products from
Health and wellness imports are sourced primarily from four origins. India is the dominant origin for contract-manufactured dietary supplements. China covers finished goods, fitness equipment, and wellness devices. We run regular sailings on all four lanes.
India
the largest origin for contract-manufactured dietary supplements globally, with major manufacturing clusters in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Himachal Pradesh. WHO-GMP certified facilities concentrated in Ahmedabad and Mumbai. Sailings from Nhava Sheva and Mundra into US East and West Coast ports.
China
primary origin for finished wellness products, fitness equipment, personal care devices, and supplement packaging components. Manufacturing in Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Fujian. Sailings from Shanghai, Ningbo, and Shenzhen.
Vietnam
growing origin for personal care and wellness goods as brands diversify out of China. Manufacturing clusters near Ho Chi Minh City. Sailings with West Coast transit of 18 to 22 days.
Thailand
established origin for herbal supplements, nutraceutical raw materials, and wellness personal care. Sailings from Laem Chabang into both coasts.
Customs and compliance for health and wellness imports
Health and wellness imports interact with FDA in addition to CBP, which adds a compliance layer that does not exist for most other consumer goods categories. We manage both agencies on the same file.
Tariff and duty management
Most health and wellness goods from China carry Section 301 tariffs in addition to standard MFN duty. India-origin supplements are not subject to Section 301, which is one reason the lane has grown as brands look for duty-efficient sourcing for contract-manufactured products.

How your health and wellness account runs
Health and wellness import programs require tighter pre-shipment coordination than most consumer goods categories because FDA compliance issues cannot be resolved at the port after goods arrive. The operations team on your account builds compliance into the pre-shipment sequence, not the clearance sequence. For Amazon sellers, our Amazon FBA shipping handles FNSKU labeling, FBA prep, and direct delivery to fulfillment centers.

Supplier documentation management
certificate of analysis, manufacturer credentials, ingredient sourcing documentation, and FDA facility registration status tracked by supplier and refreshed before each shipment cycle.

FDA prior notice coordination
prior notice filed on every shipment before vessel arrival, with confirmation tracked and on file so your operations team has proof of filing if FDA questions the entry.

Retailer compliance for supplement programs
Walmart, Target, Amazon, and GNC routing guides applied on supplement and wellness shipments where retail distribution is part of the program.

Weekly status and compliance review
open POs, vessel status, FDA filing confirmations, and any active import alert risk reviewed on a standing call so your regulatory and logistics teams are aligned before the container arrives.
What you can track on every container
Container status and FDA filing status flow to one dashboard, with holds and examination requests flagged as soon as they are issued.
Vessel ETA and milestones
origin departure, transshipment, US port arrival, FDA prior notice confirmation, customs release, drayage, and DC delivery.
FDA examination alerts
any FDA examination request escalated immediately so your compliance team can respond and schedule the examination without delay.
Demurrage and detention alerts
flagged 48 hours before free time expires, with daily cost projections. FDA holds that extend past free time generate demurrage, which cannot always be avoided but can be minimized with early notice.
Quarterly program review
freight spend by lane, FDA examination rate by supplier, customs accuracy, and duty paid by product line, so your regulatory and supply chain teams see the trend rather than reacting to individual events.

Health and wellness importing: frequently asked questions
Prior notice is the advance notification FDA requires before food and dietary supplement shipments arrive at a US port of entry. It must be submitted electronically through CBP's entry system and confirmed by FDA before the vessel arrives. The filing window opens 15 days before arrival and closes 4 hours before arrival for ocean shipments and 4 hours before arrival for air. A shipment that arrives without confirmed prior notice can be held by FDA for refusal of entry. We file prior notice on every health and wellness shipment as part of the pre-arrival sequence, with confirmation tracked and on file before the vessel reaches US waters.
An FDA import alert is a standing instruction that authorizes FDA field offices to detain shipments from a specific manufacturer, country, or product category without physical examination. Import alerts are issued when FDA has found repeated violations from a source: contamination, labeling fraud, undeclared ingredients, or lack of facility registration. If your supplier is on an import alert, every shipment from that source can be detained at the US port regardless of the quality of the individual shipment. We check your supplier name and facility registration against active import alerts before your first booking and before each new supplier is added to your program. The FDA import alert database is public, but the check has to happen before goods are produced, not after the container arrives.
DSHEA sets the labeling standard for dietary supplements sold in the US. Required elements include a statement of identity identifying the product as a dietary supplement, the net quantity of contents, the supplement facts panel listing serving size, servings per container, and each dietary ingredient with its quantity, the manufacturer or distributor name and address, and directions for use. Structure-function claims (statements about how the supplement affects the body) require a specific disclaimer: "This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease." Non-compliant labeling is grounds for FDA refusal of entry. For supplement programs with multiple SKUs or multiple origin factories, we collect and review label artwork before the production run, not after the goods have shipped.
Yes, for most supplement formats. Dietary supplements manufactured in India classify under HTS Chapter 21 and pay standard MFN duty rates, which are zero or very low for most tablet, capsule, and powder formats. They are not subject to Section 301 tariffs, which apply only to goods of Chinese origin. Chinese-origin supplement components and finished goods typically carry Section 301 additional duties of 7.5 to 25 percent on top of the MFN rate. For brands sourcing contract-manufactured supplements, India offers a meaningful duty cost advantage over China. The tradeoff is lead time: India to US West Coast runs 22 to 26 transit days from Nhava Sheva, versus 14 to 18 days from Shanghai. For programs with long enough planning cycles, the duty savings usually exceed the carrying cost of the additional transit time.
An FDA examination request means FDA wants to inspect the shipment before it clears. There are two types: a documentary examination, where FDA reviews the labeling, prior notice, and supporting documentation without physically opening the goods, and a physical examination, where goods are moved to an examination facility and opened. Physical examinations add 3 to 10 days to the clearance process and generate port examination fees and potentially demurrage if the container is past its free time. The most common triggers are prior notice issues, import alert matches, labeling questions, and random sampling programs. We escalate FDA examination requests immediately so your compliance team can respond to document requests the same day and schedule physical examinations without unnecessary delay.
FDA examination rates are highest for liquid supplements, herbal and botanical products, products with novel or undeclared ingredients, and any supplement from a manufacturer that has previously had FDA violations. Protein powders and pre-workout supplements get elevated scrutiny for undeclared stimulants and controlled substances. Probiotics are examined for contamination and label accuracy on strain identification. Country of origin also affects examination rates: certain source countries for botanicals and herbal extracts have elevated examination rates due to historical contamination findings. We track examination history by supplier and product category across your program so you can identify which SKUs carry the most compliance risk before they become port holds.
Yes. Supplement programs that sell through Walmart, Target, Amazon, GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, or Costco have both FDA compliance requirements and retailer routing guide requirements on the same shipment. The FDA piece covers prior notice, labeling, and clearance. The retailer piece covers packaging specs, GS1-128 labeling, EDI 856 ASN transmission, and DC appointment compliance. We manage both on the same file. The FDA and routing guide requirements are coordinated at origin during the pre-shipment review so the container arrives compliant on both dimensions, not just cleared through customs.
India to US West Coast from Nhava Sheva or Mundra into Los Angeles or Long Beach runs 22 to 26 transit days, plus 5 to 7 days for origin booking and documentation, 2 to 4 days for customs clearance and FDA prior notice confirmation, and 1 to 2 days for drayage and DC delivery. Total door-to-DC planning window is 30 to 40 days under normal conditions. China to US West Coast from Shanghai or Ningbo runs 14 to 18 transit days with a similar planning window of 22 to 32 days total. Air freight from India or China door-to-door runs 5 to 8 days. For supplement programs with hard launch dates or retail floor-set commitments, we build the booking schedule backwards from the DC appointment, accounting for FDA prior notice timing and potential examination delays on the first shipment from a new supplier.
